About the episode
This episode starts the way many menopause days start: with a little chaos and a lot of feelings. Dannielle had one of those mornings where the brain is moving faster than the rest of life and decided the obvious solution was to start writing a book. Working title: Marriage and Menopause: A Survival Guide (Sort Of). Honestly? We’d read it.
Then we get into the topic of the day: menopausal morning stiffies.
Not those stiffies. The kind where you wake up in the morning and your body feels like it spent the night locked in a pretzel. Hips stiff. Back stiff. Ribs stiff. The simple act of rolling over or sitting up takes a minute while everything remembers how to function.
If you’ve ever had one of those mornings where you lie there thinking, why does everything hurt?, you’re not alone. It turns out this is a pretty common menopause experience.
We talk about how hormonal changes—especially declining estrogen (one of our favorite topics!)—can affect inflammation, joints, muscles, and even how we perceive pain. Which helps explain why things can feel especially creaky first thing in the morning.
Of course, menopause isn’t the only possible reason for joint pain, so we also talk about the importance of paying attention to your body and checking in with your doctor if something feels more serious or persistent.
From there the conversation turns practical, because that’s what we do. We swap ideas about things that might help take the edge off the morning stiffness:
- gentle stretching and movement
- getting back into regular walking or strength training
- paying attention to inflammation triggers, including alcohol and diet
- small habits that help your body wake up a little more comfortably
None of us have this completely figured out (shocking, we know), but we’re comparing notes and figuring it out together.
If you’ve ever woken up feeling like your body aged about 20 years overnight, this episode is for you. We’re sharing what we’re noticing, what we’re trying, and comparing notes along the way.
And if you’ve discovered something that actually helps with the morning stiffies, we’d love to hear about it.
